Affectionately known as the “Triple Six” among collectors, the Rolex Sea-Dweller 16660 was introduced in 1978 as the second reference in Rolex’s saturation diving line and produced until approximately 1988. A true transitional model, it bridges the vintage 1665 and the later 16600, incorporating elements of both generations. Rolex produced the 1665 and 16660 concurrently for roughly five years.
The 16660 brought significant technical advancements, including a depth rating increase from 610 to 1,220 meters, the introduction of a sapphire crystal, and a unidirectional bezel. It was powered by the upgraded Caliber 3035, replacing the 1575, and featured a larger, more efficient helium escape valve.
Early examples were fitted with Oyster Fliplock ref. 93150 bracelets (later 93160), and dials without white gold surrounds were produced until around 1985. Mk1 dials are distinguished by the “f” in “ft” not overlapping the “t,” a subtle but important detail for collectors.
This example features a matte dial and is in immaculate condition. Serial #8119840 dates production to 1984 and was acquired from the estate of the original owner. Nothing has been altered or serviced by us; it remains in its original, untouched condition as found after years in storage—an exceptional and increasingly rare time capsule.
It is accompanied by its original set, including inner and outer boxes, hang tag, anchor, wallet with Bühlmann decompression table, tool, and extra wetsuit extension link. The watch is running, keeping time, and remains 100% original.
Combining vintage character with modern durability, the “Triple Six” is widely regarded as a robust, “bomb-proof” Sea-Dweller—well-suited for both daily wear and serious collecting.
